I am debating between My Fathers world and Heart of Dakota. I think MFW is like that --- it gets trimmed and decluttered so that just right is what you have. You can view a list of all of their samples, manuals, etc. Father and son light. Some of the books have become ultimate favorites that I now read to all of my children as they get older such as My Father's Dragon, but I wasn't a huge fan of quite a few of them. Some things might involve non craft involve some paper models once in a while.
I made a video (see at the bottom of this post) on my channel discussing why we made this huge change, and why I'm so content now. I don't get to do those lessons. My Father's World provides a large number of curriculum samples. I purchased Adventures for my advanced 1st grader (it's designed for 2nd/3rd grade) used from the My Father's World Used Curriculum Exchange group on Facebook. MFW is so much more Bible based, Jesus Christ is at the center, it is fun, easy to complete (not easy academically), easy to do (not easy in terms of work), and great academics. They have designed the curriculum to easily combine students from 2nd-8th grade. They even had the children memorize the love chapter from the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13! I felt like with SL we skimmed topics, and they can not remember so much of what we skimmed! Holds off on teaching other cultures/religions until the child is more mature. There were some free options when I started homeschooling fourteen years ago, but free usually meant online, and I've studied early childhood brain development for too long to be ok with all screen curriculum. Ultimately, its moms decision, not mine. The manual gives insightful and specific discussion questions for them to discuss their History Spine (A History of the US by Joy Hakim) with me daily as their teacher. However, quantity does not equal quality. The one about the science being weak? Giggle I know that *I* would not be able to learn that way. MFW provides several books to read, and each child retains what is developmentally appropriate for their age. Hands-on with MFW-1 were things like making a shepherd's bag (easy enough even for me and I don't sew), baking Hamantashen cookies.
I think MFW does a good job of presenting just Bible & leaving the interpretation up to the parents, so it's easy to use by folks of any doctrine. When you buy the main packages, you typically receive Bible, History, Science, Readers, Music, and Art. And something unique I think is that MFW tests all these activities with many families, decides which are doable, and schedules a realistic amount of time in the teacher guide to do these things. We're kind of debating between My Father's World, and Sonlight.
And they remember what we've learned about! You learn about history and social studies, while filling your reading requirements for the day. Obviously this was just the impression of three or four people, nothing definitive or scientific, but I was still a little surprised by that. I'm laughing a little at myself right now, because when you mentioned worksheets, I thought, "Worksheets? Sonlight vs My Father's World vs Sonlight - K-8 Curriculum Board. Right now I have a K and two in the family cycle doing Creation to Greeks. What drew me to SL were the books, as I'm a big reader, and my daughter loved for me to read to her.
So the SL idea of sitting & listening to Mom read me stories all day, gives me the heebie-jeebies. They provide complete homeschool curriculum packages and individual resources and materials so you can build the preschool or K-12 homeschool curriculum that best meets your family's needs. For example, making a pot from Cornstarch & flour or drawing an ancient map. So many books (how can this be a con? He just turned 5 when we started it as well. I read Sarah Mackenzie's book, The Read Aloud Family, and knew I wanted to go with a more Charlotte Mason approach. But because we already read those subjects aloud, I am wondering how much read aloud time would be lost by doing this geography study rather than a history study. I knew Abeka Language Arts was working for him, but we didn't enjoy the history, Bible, or science. They give math, science lessons on general science topics with experiments. I like reading aloud as much as anyone, but that is all you do. Bible is also included in the History Binder. I had originally went with MFW over Sonlight because it was way cheaper, but for High School it didn't make sense to pay so much for items we were not going to use. We ultimately used P4/5, A, and P3/4 (with the next child). Also, I would really appreciate hearing what an average day using ECC consists of, if someone would be so kind as to share. It was too scheduled for us since SL micromanages your day. The history itself did not start with creation. First year homeschooling and very happy with our choice to do MFW Kindergarten. When I first came to MFW my over all summary was school is definitely more doable, my children are learning a lot more, we cover less facts and less information - but at that same time the information we do cover is far more in-depth and far more deep. This was game changer in my process, and has kept me from wasting hours looking for used curriculum. And 4 year old helping! Talk about disappointing. I am an ENFP homeschooling mom, which means I need structure or I get distracted very easily.
I love the way it is laid out. And I don't really know what my dc's styles are yet, so I'd rather do something to touch on each one. Updated 2021- High School. Treat the teacher's manual like a smorgasbord, take from it what works for you, and leave the rest. Since our history read-aloud together time is very precious around here, I am very reluctant to give that up.
MFW definitely isn't easier. Most high school homeschoolers have to buy their math, science, and electives separately anyways, so Sonlight's ability to mix and match and buy a la carte History and Literature items made it so I didn't have books we would not use, like we did with MFW 9th grade. However, it needs to be done in small doses. They seem so similar! Dd (9) MFWK, MFW1st, EXP to 1850, 1850 to MT. Everything is laid out really well in the teachers manual in my opinion. The World Geography book is a little over their heads, so we have only done a few of those pages. I quickly tossed the manuals and just started reading the books how I wanted to and teaching what I wanted to.
