List of Series List of Authors Help |. In the second selection, Gollie embarks on a voyage of the imagination, exploring the Andes Mountains (all whilst in her own home), while an impatient Bink can't quite grasp that her friend doesn't wish to be interrupted. Though this book was a 2011 Theodor Seuss Geisel Award honor book for beginning readers, I found some of the vocabulary to be way too advanced for someone in first, second, or even third grade: outrageous, compromise, bonanza, marvelous, companion, unremarkable, extraordinary, accomplishment, interruptions. Gollie cannot see its appeal, but when a terrible accident occurs she's the one who knows exactly what to do. Worldview Rating: 4. Also, being friends with someone very different from you can make you look at the world from a whole new perspective. This book was delightful. And when Bink and Gollie long to get their picture into a book of record holders, where will they find the kudos they seek? These are a great fit for kids who are bored with regular easy reader fare or who are ready for harder vocabulary but not quite ready for longer books. If you get a chance to see her, go! Bink and Gollie is a wonderfully creative, imaginative and gorgeously illustrated booked. While DiCamillo and McGhee have written this as an early reader, they have had fun sprinkling in some longer, fun words like "outrageous", "implore", and "marvelous". The great pairings of children's literature involve friends with differences. Bink gets excited by a giant bin of socks on sale, opting for the most colorful pair in the pile.
In fact, when these authors tell a tale of jealousy, it's the more reflective and mature Gollie who turns green, not passionate Bink. It was a fine debut, but I little suspected the man capable of the visual splendor that is Bink and Gollie. Slapstick and sweetness, drollery and delight abound in this follow-up to the Geisel Award–winning, New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book Bink and Gollie, written by the beloved and best-selling Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGhee and brought to hilarious life by Tony Fucile. This DiCamillo/McGhee/Fucile Trio is gold. I enjoyed this book so much, I entered to win a copy at Goodreads' First Reads giveaway program, a giveaway ending on 12/20. He is officially on my list of possible illustrators for the children's book I will never write. At the same time his line work, and especially his watery shading and attention to detail, calls David Small to mind. Bink and Gollie strokes my hair as I cry uncontrollably, but it knows I am telling the truth. It takes noticing that skirt to realize that Bink is a girl at all, sometimes.
I apparently can't say anything cohesive about this book right now. Both Bink and Gollie books are surely destined to be classics. Several of my most trusty kid-lit sources were likening it to the very best early-reader pals ––Frog & Toad, George & Martha, and Elephant & Piggie–– and it's co-authored by Kate DiCamillo, so it was bound to be good. Bink like's bright socks, marvelous fish, and Gollie's pancakes, Gollie likes Bink just as she is - without the socks or the fish - except when she interrupts Gollie's adventures to far-flung places.
That these girls have personalities I can say even this much about is testament to how rich with detail and brimming with personality it is. Maybe it would do the same for you and your kids. Format: Easy Reader - print. Bink and Gollie are incomparable friends. The girls go to the State Fair and have a blast as Bink tries to win the world's largest donut in the Whack-a-Duck game and Gollie attempts to wow the audience at a talent show. Bink is hungry from all the skating and asks Gollie to make pancakes.
They're unique entities in ways more significant than the obvious height difference; Bink is fun-loving and rambunctious if a bit sloppy and Gollie, while adventurous in her own right, is more reserved and critical, and given her word choices, I'm guess well-read. She is smart, organized and looks neat. The third adventure has Bink buying a pet goldfish and Gollie is irritated or jealous that Bink wants it as a friend. 5, it is really more appropriate for the level 2 reader because of the length and difficulty of the words. However, I think most young readers will be completely engrossed by Fucile's illustrations which manage to seem richly detailed and sparse at the same time. In 2010 alone I think I've kept only the books signed to me alongside, Meanwhile, and A Sick Day for Amos McGee.
We don't see the houses till page 15, when we discover that Gollie lives in a Streamline Moderne tree house, while Bink lives at the foot of the same tree in a cottage that appears to have been built by the architectural firm of the Three Little Pigs. Setting out from their super-deluxe tree house, they share three comical adventures involving painfully bright socks, an impromptu trek to the Andes, and a most unlikely marvelous companion. The vocabulary is rather sophisticated compared to typical easy readers, but lots of illustrations and just a little text on each page makes the books manageable for kids who are reluctant to read.
