Troubleshoot the down position of the trim switch by maintaining contact between the red lead and the terminal to which the red wire was connected. The power trim switch on a boat raises and lowers the engine. CORROSION inside the quick disconnect plugs is also highly suspect. I took it for a twenty mile run yesterday (april 17) and everything seems to be working... It positions the boats engine for optimum performance while underway. Seahorse Possibly a relay assembly but don't overlook an intermittent trim motor, or a bad connection. I tried to take the throttle assembly off to check out the switch but was not able to figure out how to get at the two scews holding the cover for the throttle handle together that are up against the side of the boat. Installed a new switch and all is well. Does the electric trim and tilt pump motor not move at all? I was just outside messing with seems like it works fine from the start and the more you mess with it, the more it wants to stop working. Are there any diagrams on how to remove and/or repair the switch in the handle? I couldn't get anyone to understand the story until I accidentally bumped the shift/throttle lever with my butt and the tilt motor started running again on its own??? I found what appears to be a relay next to the battery that looks to be dipped into a waterproofing or protective coating? Try disconnecting it and using the switch on the controls. Up and down do nothing. IMPORTANT: The engine outdrive trim tilt pump motor will work only if BOTH relays are connected. The motor pan trim switch, the throttle handle, another switch on the helm that controls the Jack-plate on one side and the motor trim on the other side.
On the down relay play a jumper between terminals 87 and 30. How do you get to the switch? At first I thought a boat had closed on me and turned around expecting to see a 40 ft. DONZI about to land on me.. When you activate either relay by pressing the tilt switch up or down, the internal solenoid winding becomes energized (you should hear the relay click) and the series ground contact is broken and toggled over to a 12 volt input (terminal 87 - the thick red wire). The trim switch on my throttle handle is not working correctly. To test the motor itself, bypassing the relays and relay wiring, find the two heavy gauge wires that lead to the trim/tilt pump motor. I'll worry about the PowerPole next year while hiding from the northern winter down south.. nfa1eab. These kits include snap rings, oil seals, back-up rings, o-rings, trim dust seals, trim cylinder end screws, and other necessary components for a specific Yamaha outboard.
Indiana-based Ken McBroom has been writing since 2005. If you encounter a branch of the circuit in which you cannot measure any voltage when a voltage should be present, then the fault is associated with that branch of the circuit. The trim motor was still running] You did not provide any information so we could help you specifically, but if that was a bass boat or multi-species boat, the front mounted trim switch is usually the culprit as it is not as high a quality or as water-proof as the outboard motor company switches. When replacing relays, always replace both at the same time.
When using a voltmeter, the mere presence of 12V can be misleading if a wire is barely hanging on, because it will show voltage but wont be able to pass current needed to run the motor. It is worth repeating here: The voltage and current flows through BOTH relays, therefore when testing be sure you have a complete circuit. Sorry, help me should I look for/at? Went out today and noticed the tilt/trim isn't working right. Follow the voltage from the source of the electrical power, through the circuit, to the load. Mercury Marine Trim Tab Relays: - Hella 12V 4RD 960 388-01 SPDT relay (cube shaped relay without bracket). Troubleshooting, Testing and Bypassing SPDT Power Trim Tilt Relays. You need the manual or an E. shop technician with hands on. Registered: 1322180125 Posts: 75. Does it look like this: To check the flow of electrical current the usual procedure is to monitor the voltage present in the circuit.
Remove the screws in the throttle handle and remove the cover to access the trim switch. If you hear a tone while button is pressed, the down position of the trim switch is good. Registered: 1208572682 Posts: 8, 963. I have a 2000 Nitro CDX with 200 HP Mercury EFI (rebuilt in 2007). I've run the wires looking for an obvious break or a wire rubbing against another and it looks pretty clean and in good shape... Kind of like it gets hot and overheats?..

As others have said first make sure it is the handle that is the problem. I changed the motor switch out and has been fine since. Isolate the problem? Each of these switches is wired the same.
