10mm Socket (deep well). 43. i use a socket on a screwdriver style handle, works good as theirs pretty much no way to over torque them that way. Same for both sides. The valve cover is easier to clean than the head. The studs ensure the gasket is lined up right and you don't have to be a circus performer to hold it in place all the way around while trying to get fasteners in. If it doesn't leak and doesn't come loose, you're good. You will be kicking yourself if you removed a fuel injector plug under that intake collector and have to remove it all to plug one little thing back in. They are a "shanked" bolt, so NO matter how tight you do them you will not pull the cover down any tighter on the seals.
I usually run them down same as Terry, with a 10mm socket on a 1/4 inch driver. I've seen it a hundred times over the years. Can someone with access to a service manual tell me the order and torque specs for a 2008 2. I also make a habit of snugging the bottom row first. 09-27-2015 01:53 AM. X2i prefer studs and the new style thick rubber gaskets with steel inserts. You don't want to warp the valve cover by cranking the fasteners down too much. It doesn't mention any liquid gasket for n/a SOHC engine. To confirm, it is 7 ft-lbs, correct? The nut driver/hand tight works great. I don't use any silicone/rtv either. I haven't had it leak yet. I realize it's an old thread, but ran across this doing some cam-cover research and thought I'd add the answer according to that there's anything at all wrong with the sage advice posted by Grand and Doug!
