The trouble with lies is they have a tendency, if not well managed, to catch a man out. Such great fun, joyous, happy making, I loved it! Then as soon as I wrote the scene in To Have and to Hoax where they go to the Belfry, which is Julian's theater, and they meet, as soon as I had them meet, I was like, "Okay, they're clearly going to get together. Of course, it's not a straight and narrow journey as they both have to deal with their respective baggages first, but it's one that's heartwarming from start to finish. But at many points of the book he just viewed her as a trophy wife.
Firstly, a romance is only as good as its characters and relationship and both were top-notch here. Listening to by Anais Inara Chase and Joel Froomkin narrate this story was like being transported in time and dropped into a world where a woman's dowry could make or break her chances of becoming wed. Looking forward to reading the first in this series and more from this author. Just a fabulous book that was nicely written. Her novels, Well Met, Well Played, and Well Matched, were inspired by her time volunteering as a pub wench with her local Renaissance Faire. Unfortunately the plot wasn't that strong in this book. On the whole, I felt there was a restraint exercised in some of the plot that maybe set some readers up for disappointment, but I found easy to read. We don't need every book to be super steamy, but since Emily and Julian are deepening their relationship outside of the bedroom, we would have loved to see how it translated into the bedroom, too. Behind Ryle's veneer of civility are his jealousy and resentment. Honestly, this book just made me happy and was a bright spot in a stressful week so I am giving it four stars for that alone. But they soon realize they have very different plans for their marriage - Julian wants Emily to remain a society wife, while Emily discovers an interest in the theater. There was on page intimacy, some adult subject matter (mostly mentions of mistresses, gambling, debt, duels) and little violence. The only way he thinks he'll be able to welcome a more respectable audience is if he marries a respectable woman. Her marriage to Julian offers her (or so she thinks) the freedom she craves from perfection. Something I've noticed (and really appreciate! ) Here's why you should ignore me and read it!
