It takes a particularly skilled author to hide twists in a narrative where the protagonist is going backwards through time, and Wrong Place Wrong Time had several great secrets that you will not see coming. And I hadn't really thought to ask some of those types of questions I'm going to have to go listen now because it would be interesting to hear the day to day aspects of writing a book in terms of what you're talking about, exactly. What do you think will happen there? He's past his curfew and eventually he ambles up the road. "Genre-bending and totally original, I loved Wrong Place, Wrong Time. It's been a while since a thriller has taken me on such a adventure, I loved the twists in the already unique plot and didn't see the big reveals coming. That must be the key. Why is this the case? But nothing is that simple and McAllister is not here to suggest that Jen is a bad mother, only that parenting is complex and fraught. His future shattered. The reader picks up clues alongside Jen and wonders, with her, about whether she really knows the people in her life. People wouldn't say, oh, it's just too gripping the way they do with books. McAllister uses the central conceit of Wrong Place, Wrong Time brilliantly. So tell me how the title came about and then I know you have a different UK cover than US cover and let's talk about both.
Did you just love it when they showed it to you? But on the night of Halloween, just after midnight, Jen watches horrified as Todd pulls a knife out of his bag and uses it to kill a man on the street outside their house. This was just wonderful and I'm thrilled we got to talk all about Wrong Place, Wrong Time, and now I've got to go back and find the choice as well. And they're, like you say, quite ordinary people. Meanwhile, while struggling with the time loop, her husband and son are carrying on as usual. And that would have been an interesting way to handle it, actually, and it never really crossed my mind to do that. The storyline was refreshingly unique. OBSERVER, 'THRILLER OF THE MONTH'. The risk that the ending is going to kind of ruin it all. Todd as a two year old is not the same as Todd as a ten year old. She finally sees him through the window and he's almost home when she sees another man approaching her son, and her son simply stabs the man. McAllister sticks to her rules reasonably faithfully so that the narrative hangs together. It's a brave move by the author, but one which works surprisingly well and keeps the question of the what why and wherefores of the story very much alive. I overall liked this novel!
And I've learned not to put pen to paper too early in this stage because you will take so many wrong turns before you get the right one. Like, that is social, as you say. I'd love to have you. I have literally been telling everyone I know preorder this book, you must read it, it comes out August 2 because I just think it's going to be the biggest hit. And I do live by that in fiction, and I really wanted the reveal to deliver, and I hope it did. That is what happens to Jen, devoted mother, hard-working divorce lawyer and loving wife of Kelly. While Jen's storyline is the most prominent in the novel, there is also an interesting secondary storyline that follows a police officer who is assigned to investigate crimes in the same area as the main story is taking place. 12:14] Gillian: Yeah, I always think about this when I plot a twist because I always think it shouldn't be a kind of, oh my God, what? By the end of the year, April was dead. So you're not having these crazy people who you can just then have do whatever they're going to do because they're already crazy or upset or whatever it is, but instead you've got these kind of everyday people in a good way. I mean, did you sit down and plot every single bit out or did you try to work through that as you wrote? Or rather, it was tomorrow. What is the most important message that you took from this book?
This book does that to some extent – as Jen goes back in time she gets to do over some of her mistakes and realise how much she has missed of her own life, particularly in relation to her son. I highly recommend it to fans of women's fiction, thrillers, and sci-fi books. But actually, I think the reader, if you say there's something hidden in an old quarry and we're going to go there tomorrow, the reader wants to turn the page and say the quarry is and then the description and then the characters there, that's what the reader wants. Until you wake...... and it is yesterday. McAllister is a writer at the absolute top of her game.
