This book is SO well done! Olivia is the single mother of Asher, a teenage boy who fell deeply in love with Lily, a girl who recently was new at his school. And it took, like, 24 hours. Lily is revealed as being a transgender woman, which contributes to the controversy surrounding her death. The main character is a beekeeper so lots of bee talk. A Beautiful Portrayal of the Complexities of Gender and a Mother’s Love –. But Caitlin, whose own demons have been hinted at, will not be so lucky. Authors Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan join to tackle a sensitive issue in the well-intentioned but dragging novel Mad Honey.
I don't want to give anything away because the first twist, especially, blew my mind. Not that I would've been right for either of these characters, but I've done two memoirs and a nonfiction book called Good Boy, so I've done it on three occasions. That's definitely not Olivia's voice. I haven't personally interacted with her yet, but you can bet I'm going to. Asher starts to tell Jordan that he did know Lily was trans before her murder. The idea for MAD HONEY came from Jennifer Finney Boylan's dream. 'Just be yourself, ' they tell you, to put you at ease. I have tried hard to keep the spirit of the original comment while still keeping it ad-friendly. You tell them if someone in the family's getting married. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. As you were speaking and mentioned that Lily had been picked up and whisked away by her mom, it occurred to me, so had Asher. We read the story from the perspectives of Olivia and Lily. She had been born Liam and her mother allowed her to go through bottom surgery after Lily attempted suicide.
JFB: The whole thing with the bees, that was Jodi. If needed, you should google for content/trigger warnings. I was delighted to see the honey recipes at the end of the book.. "We both fall silent for a little bit. This is a story that will stay with you and hopefully lend itself to empathy and acceptance.
I read her books nonstop in highschool/college and I was so happy to see that this read like her older books. Lily recalls what preceded her suicide attempt: at her old school, she confided in one friend that she was trans and was badly bullied. Was the TTP all a ruse on Jordan's part to create reasonable doubt, something he says over and over through the book? This book was fantastic. Mad honey who killed lily evans. JFB: It's a matriarchal society. JP: It's totally matriarchal. JP: Also, that it is the only good thing to ever have come out of Twitter. She admits being with Lily the day she died.
As usual, this Jodi Picoult book was devastating and fascinating in equal parts. For a moment, she pretends she hasn't heard him, but then, she turns, and a game begins: a legendary collaboration that will launch them to stardom. All of the characters were vivid and complex, but I do wish that some of them, particularly Lily's mom and Asher's best friend, were more fleshed out. Jordan questions Asher about his relationship with Lily. All opinions stated in this review are mine. The pacing and jumping back and forth between characters and storyline COMPLETELY CONVOLUTED THE STORY!!!!!!!! And does Olivia really believe in love? But wait, I'm going to tell you the best part. I will not spoil the plot for anyone but I would like to thank the authors for writing a book to make people pause and consider what they think they know to be true in hopes of opening their minds to new beliefs and values. The writing was consistent and each perspective had its own voice. Authors Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan each bring their own strengths to this book. Lily has had quite a tough life up to this point, but now that she's met Asher, she feels truly happy. Yes, there was suspense as I waited for the trial's outcome, but there was no real investigation into Lily's death, not much evidence discussed, and no real suspects besides Asher.
Here are some of my thoughts and questions about some other issues of the book: What was your favorite part of the book? Now he's taller than her, running to hockey practice before school, grunting his answers at her over breakfast, and being her first assistant when she tends to the bees.
