2021 - I re-read this for university and loved it even more the second time round... Lord Henry is a paradigmatic sophist and his epigrams are delightful (partly because it's easy to forget that he is more rhetoric than truth). I intentionally used the word "being" for Dorian's body no longer harbours his soul; it's in the painting. D. in physics, he and future wife Jane (Felicity Jones, transparently milking tears) woo each other, and Hawking learns that he has the progressive neurological disorder "motor neuron disease, " a. k. a. ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease. As shown in the feature film The Theory of Everything, which tells the human story behind his struggle, Hawking was far from being the archetype unworldy or nerdish scientist. However, a downside of his iconic status was that that his comments attracted exaggerated attention even on topics where he had no special expertise – for instance, philosophy, or the dangers from aliens or from intelligent machines. Yet Jane Hawking records it actually coming over the telephone, and in fact by that time she already knew Stephen had a degenerative motor neuron disease. Hell, he was even jailed for his sexuality, and died soon after from all the inhumane injuries he endured while in prison. Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones, also terrific) was taken with the brainy, awkward Hawking and wanted to marry him, even though he had recently received a devastating diagnosis.

Now, I don't know what has come over you. He's the man who leads him down that dark road and just like Dorian he is completely oblivious to the magnitude of his influence! Perhaps it was done as to not tarnish the reputation of a man who is largely recognised as one of the cleverest individuals in the world, and who has gone to the effort to keep his personal life out of the spotlight for so long. Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones are outstanding in the roles of Stephen and Jane. The Picture of Dorian Gray is about a young man named Dorian Gray. For all of us who are familiar with Hawking as the brilliant cosmologist in a wheelchair who speaks through a computerized voice system, "The Theory of Everything" introduces us to a vastly different man.
