A mesmerising book:original lyrical style, strong characters, authenticity and mysticism, self-sacrifice, duty and humanity. Despite its steep inclines, it was a pretty, sun-drenched little valley, and on walking further you could enjoy a little social interaction with the locals, with a nod and a wave from afar.

The 800 year old church cannot be heated or lit, and the pastor has entered into an agreement with a group of German architects for the church to be dismantled and moved. Twenty year old Astrid Hekne was hungry for knowledge, asking why things were done a certain way. The sense of time is as strong as the sense of place and the characters feel like real 19th century people, rather than modern day people dropped into a random historical setting.
