Director David Cronenberg lingers on the gore not in an effort to completely gross out the audience, but to illustrate a point about the grotesquery of violence, and the actual harm it causes to the human body. They will find themselves not only entertained but also pondering the movie and its questioning of violence and identify for days afterwards. Alice points out the "69-ing" sex scene in particular and explains how it inspires her to create images that she has never seen before. It's instructive that the only other sex scene in the film, which occurs some 15 minutes in, finds Edie playing bedroom dress-up in a cheerleader's outfit, an overtly feminine costume that causes Tom to teasingly ask, "What have you done with my wife?
