Eventually, we realized the sound wasn't really moving, so we ventured a look outside the tent, and discovered that our wild imaginations had turned a squirrel dropping pinecones into a giant, hungry grizzly bear. We're also fans of the hike down to Thunderbird Pond, as well as the trek over to Upper Kintla Lake and its accompanying campgrounds. We laughed at ourselves, packed up camp, ate our trusty oatmeal breakfast, and headed for Upper Kintla Lake. Once back up top, we bid Pocket Lake farewell and headed on. And while it's nearly inaccessible to beginner hikers, this natural beauty falls under a larger ecosystem of waterfalls, trails, and expansive mountain peaks on the northern grounds of Glacier. Just above the Hole In The Wall is the east side of Boulder Pass, which rests directly north below the towering Boulder Peak. Rumors of bears circulated everywhere. One of the biggest rewards of making it to Hole-in-the-Wall is its idyllic nearby campground, which – of course – the waterfall runs right through. And hoped for the best. This campground has a really nice spot to make lunch, filter water and go to the bathroom. Everyone kicked off their shoes, waded in the water, and enjoyed being dried by the warm sun as we ate jerky, salsa, nuts, and the other staples of the trail. From Boulder Pass, you start heading down through floral meadows with magnificent views at the Agassiz Glacier on Kintla Peak and its neighbors. Time: 3 days, 3 nights. This point is where the Bowman Lake Trail and the Boulder Pass Trail meet. Along the way, you will cross over a very cool glacier field (where there are two mesmerizing alpine lakes) before you see a sizeable round valley down below. Heading west through the trees, you come across Lake Janet, then the campground (which is not at the lake, but past it) and then Lake Francis. Once you leave Polebridge, you will drive a bit further down the dirt road before you actually enter the national park at the Polebridge Ranger Station.
Even if you have to work your way up to this bad boy, Hole-in-the-Wall Falls is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the intrepid traveler. I think I could spend years there and still be content exploring its landscapes; five days was hardly adequate. For those people, it truly is a reward as it is a special place. This trail will work its way along the base of the south face of Mount Chapman, and then will head northward once the trail gets completely around the huge mass of Mount Chapman. We had gotten our first glimpse of Glacier National Park, and had slipped into the beginning of an unreal five days of backpacking through unbelievable scenery and topography.
