Rules of Civility is his first full-length novel. Amor Towles style is snappy and jazzy just like the era he is depicting. Did she change to fit in? Then we did Cervantes and Borges before reading García Marquez. Anne Grandyn is Tinker's wealthy and sophisticated godmother. I'm not sure whether I thought the novel really needed to incorporate Washington's "Rules of Civility" into the story.

Towles: I've been writing fiction since I was a kid. I thought it was a bit precious and that the writer was trying too hard. Rather, The Lincoln Highway is a layered journey about the burdens of expectations, the grief of lost dreams, and the meaning of home. It also took me a while to understand Tinker's story. They gave us each a few thousand dollars and sent us on our way. In retrospect, a number of careers and marriages sprang from the intersection of social circles at that party—but we certainly didn't realize the importance of the encounters at the time. She enjoys using her experience to provide engaging resources for other teachers. Why do you think the author chose to constrain the story to this limited amount of time?
I can see why Katey would not need to elaborate on that to Val, as it was long in her past. I like books that educate, books that question and books that move me. Anne tells Katey that she doesn't disapprove of Tinker and Eve, but she always thought Tinker would be attracted to someone who could challenge him intellectually.
Do you think it is an effective way to provide a chronological retelling of the story? Finding the earring is very effective foreshadowing, but I still wonder what happened to it. Each block looked like a dead end from a different country. One of the big ideas explored in this book is the idea of a perpetual scorecard of advantages and disadvantages, and the idea that all things shake out somewhat evenly—or don't. Amor Towles, the author, is happy about this development, and so should be the fans. Katey finds it with Valentine.
