Several of the guitar instructors I have worked with over the years have talked about playing 5-string banjo plectrum style by removing the fifth string and retuning to match a guitar tuning on the bottom four strings, but I really didn't want to do that because I am a bluegrass banjo player and actually used the fifth string in my arrangement in a few places.
