Saxe, a humorist and poet, wrote in 1843 of his disappointment not only with the pile of rocks but with the feeble geyser as well, calling Fenwick's creation in stone and water: A fountain that looked like a soup tureen, Piled up with rocks, and a squirt between.
The designer of the smaller fountain, Yanni Posnakoff, takes issue with Mr. Wyatt's interpretation of the Michael-slaying-Lucifer scene. Perhaps Wyatt's thinking in designing the Peace Fountain was to step away from the standard imagery of Good versus Evil and to challenge the viewer to see Good and Evil in terms of two greater invisible forces–harmony and chaos, light and darkness, peace and struggle. A present-day tour of the city's fountains might well start with one of the most recent to be built in Manhattan and work backward in time toward the site of one of the city's first fountains, built in 1843. The sculptural composition of the Peace Fountain monument at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine combines symbolic allegories, figurative sculpture, spiritual realism and sacred geometry to honor the Divine Imagination. Built in 1985 by the Cathedral Artist-in-Residence Greg Wyatt, the forty-foot high Bronze sculpture consists of a crab, the decapitated head of Satan, the double helix of DNA, and nine giraffes! As a continuation of my prior blog post ( click here) about the magnificent Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City, I'd like to show you the very unusual " Peace Fountain " which is located in the side yard of the cathedral. Now one of Wyatt's most complex and interesting works would be unveiled in the rolling grounds of the Cathedral.
Despite being built as a fountain, the sculpture currently holds no water. 48 relief panels on the giant bronze front doors depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments and the Apocalypse. Since it might not be appropriate for all of us to celebrate today's #NationalTakeAWalkInTheParkDay, we've created a virtual walk through the Cathedral's Close with a spotlight on Artist in Residence Greg Wyatt's Peace Fountain. The 40 foot-high 16-ton bronze sculpture on the top of fountain weaves together several representations of the conflict between good and evil. Central to the sculpture and message is the Archangel Michael with outspread wings and a down-thrusting sword. On the grounds are the Cathedral House, the Ogilvie House, the Diocesan House, the Synod House, and the Ithiel Town Building. Facing West, a somnolent Moon reflects tranquility from a joyous Sun smiling to the East. Chosen as the winner from a group of 59 designs in a competition, the memorial consists of a classically draped, reclining bronze figure that represents Memory, gazing sadly and serenely over a pool of water. A plaque at the base of the fountain provides a glimpse of insight into the meaning of this elusive sculpture: Peace Fountain celebrates the triumph of Good over Evil, and sets before us the world's opposing forces – violence and harmony, light and darkness, life and death – which God reconciles in his peace. Have you ever wondered how ballerinas dance on their toes? "I have been painting in watercolors for my entire career, learning about ideas and the places throughout the world in which I express my visual thinking and experimentation. Nine giraffes—among the most peaceable of animals—nestle and prance about the center. For the small-scale bozetti, or sculpture studio maquettes of terra cotta, Plastilina modeling clay or beeswax that I have created over a lifetime, I always acknowledge the inspiration of Michelangelo.
The group of charming animals, chose during a five-year series of competitions is known as the Children's Sculpture Garden. Within the garden are "Animals of Freedom" sculptures created by artists from kindergarten through high school that were selected in a public competition in 1985. Ascending from the pool, the freedom pedestal is shaped like the double helix of DNA, the key molecule of life. This is a practice of journal keeping for thoughts and artistically expressing forms of nature, which upon occasion will inspire three-dimensional works in bronze. "Hudson River School of Painting leading master Thomas Moran became a recognized member of the 1871 Hayden Expedition, a geographic study by 40 scientists commissioned by Congress to scientifically explore and document wildlife areas in western frontiers in lands that became Yellowstone National Park. This gruesome scene is obviously in need of constant symbolic cleansing, which is accomplished nicely by jets of water that spray, gush, splash and pour out from the bronze work in all directions, falling into a wide, slowly swirling whirlpool at its base. Learn the answers to those questions and more during this family-friendly performance featuring excerpts from famous ballets including The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. In this lobby, a three-foot-high geyser jets up inside a yellowing plastic tube about four feet high and eight inches wide.
