Antonina, the polish Zookeper's Wife, had a way with animals, that also allowed her to use her psychology to connect with even those human species that seemed without a human soul. I would recommend The Book Thief, similar but fictional set in the same period dealing with the horrors of the Holocaust and War but not as violent or sexual. Instead, Antonina's journal gets rather lost in long "whimsical" rambling passages of struggling to save the zoo during the ravages of WWII. Evidently, this was a passion project for all involved.
