This is the team's first time defeating East since moving up into the large school division. While there were a number of remarkable plays, as in Alex Chukhanenko showing off his soccer skills to keep a rally alive, the night belonged to super sophomore DeAngelo D'Aloise who could not be stopped to the tune of 19 kills, Senior right side Solly Glynn's 10 kills, Senior captain David Prozapas who recorded 18 kills and five solo blocks, and Senior captain Justin Gerhard, who put a Starpoint record 49 assists for the Spartans. Maria Giomundo led the way with 15 points. Travis Pollow scored three runs and recorded his first varsity hit. Justin Bull, Brayden Floreano and John Zawada each had a goal.
Coach Spitler lost his glasses reacting to the play. She competed in her 100 breast stroke and finished out an incredible swimming career. Friday the JV Girls Basketball Team beat Olmstead 55-9. Zach 'Lil Red" Genkinger, Drew "Poopdeck" Hayes, Sailor Sol Glynn, and Andrew "Calico" Birtch had hits in the 6th to aid in the win. Joe finished 41st and shot a 94. Every event had a Starpoint 1st and 2nd place! The Spartans were on the board first with a huge in form return from Nate Gniazdowski. Other school records include Nate Adams in the 1600 meters and Michael Cyr in the weight throw. And reaching a personal best in her 100 butterfly was Rachel Stoelting. Even on an off day, the gentlemen put in a gritty performance to finish 8th overall and an undefeated 10-0 in ECIC Division 2 to become ECIC division champions for the first time in over 10 years. Evan Saunders hit the Sectional time in both the 100 and 400 meter hurdles, as well as winning long jump. Olivia Terranova had her second shut out of the season. The future is bright, as the boys return 6 and the girls return 5 of their top 7 runners for next year. High scorers for the Grand Island game included Ava Anastasi with 13 points and 3 three-pointers, Alli Milleville with 11 points and 3 three-pointers, and Sophia Waliszewski with 9 points. For the first time in modern history, both the Girls and Boys Varsity Track and Field teams finished the regular season as ECIC division champions!!
Sophia Waliszewski was only ranked 20th in the 100 meter hurdles before the meet, but snuck through the qualifying rounds and then exploded for 2nd place in the final, only 0. They eventually lost in the tie break but what a match. Here, every single girl on the team competed against others to secure the win. Jaimie Fraass was absolutely clutch, taking second in the 400 meters and anchoring two comeback relay wins: the 4-by 800-meter relay with Emily Walby, Lydia Roselund, and Meagan Zupo; and the 4 by 400-meter relay with Mady Schmidt, Sophia Waliszewski, and Brianna Gryzbek. Wish the boys and Alivia good luck. After dropping three sets to two of the better teams from WNY (Frontier)and Albany (Columbia) by a grand total of six points (for those of you who are unfamiliar with volleyball scoring, that's as close as it gets) but the Spartans got their act together and brought home the Bronze medal/trophy. After dropping the first set 25-23 as they got used to this new lineup, the Spartans decided to put the lumber to the Jacks, knocking them out in straight sets thereafter 25-13, 25-18 and 25-15.
Both teams have a chance to lock in a league championship next Tuesday, May 17th, in a home showdown against Hamburg. The girls jumped out to a 2-0 but couldn't hold on. Olivia Ruchala chipped in with 2 runs, Anna Solar also had2 hits and was stellar behind the dish while Emilie Pascual added 2hits. Sophomore Evan Dean had 7 receptions for 135 yards and a TD. Evan Saunders was a triple winner in both hurdle events and the long jump, and Kyle Lewis won the 100 and 200 meters as well as joining the winning 4 by 100-meter relay with Ayden Eleey, Hudson Holzbaur, and Colby Madden. Both teams finished 7th out of 10 other teams. Evan Saunders also hit the Sectional standard in his second pentathlon ever. The Union Spartans hosted the Lakewood Leopards on Friday for their second conference bout of the year. Courtney Kiff and Lily Mckie each added a basket in the 4th quarter. Next week, on Tuesday, May 31st, Unified scored a home game for our first round of playoffs. Lana Boyer had a close one at 3rd singles and Erin Benson and Anna Solar also played well at 1st doubles.
The Varsity boys did Starpoint proud by coming back from a 1-0 deficit to tie the game with Brady Hathaway scoring the only goal in regular time for Starpoint. Ari Hamilton had a shutout in net, Marlee Dorgan, Lily Krentz, Mia Giamberdino, and Gabby Knoebel played unreal defense after one day of practice using our new system. And ngratulations to Erin Callahan and Micahel Dipasquale, who now hold the Starpoint school records in the 1600 meter racewalk! There's a huge track meet tomorrow, Saturday, at 2:00 P. at the Starpoint track.
