Goodreads Choice AwardNominee for Best Young Adult Fiction (2022). This story (especially the ending) will hold a special place in my heart, because I truly cherished this book. In reading both books, I interpreted Death-Cast as sort of a villain character, but I feel like in The First to Die at the End, you're reshaping that narrative.
More About This Book. Mateo is shy, anxious, and has chosen to shut himself away from the world for most of his life. This is an amazing prequel to THEY BOTH DIE AT THE END. He builds upon what he first introduced in TBDATE, providing more context to a world that had accepted (and embraced) Death-Cast as the norm. Valentino living on through the boy he loved, who loved him, was fucking BEAUTIFUL. No matter how short or long their chapters, Silvera wrote every single character with evident care. The found family aspect is always great for me. Mateo is a godfather to a cute little girl and has a wonderful friendship with her mother. This book completely blew the original out of the water for me. The one thing that brings them together is Last Friend, an app that Deckers, or people who are living their last days, can use to find companionship in this last day. In 2010, that was not really the case, but that's not really the case either today. Adam Silvera put it right there in the title: They Both Die at the End.
