Yes, he is a gay young man, but he is also more. ✖) I wish to see more of Devon and Chimaka's friendship because honestly I was rooting for them platonically, but I get it because it wasn't the major theme. But the second half really takes off running, and I could not turn the page fast enough. And i think that's a very special thing to be able to feel, i felt the story in my bones. Ace of Spades has plenty of promise, but this debut title fails to deliver. Headmaster Ward was an under-used character. Buy on Amazon, Book Depository, Wordery, Barnes & Noble, Publisher, Bookshop, Blackwell's. I write this review as a heads-up and to opine on the lack of mention of the amount of romance and sex in the book and in its blurbs. The only possible message that this book can give is "racism exists. " And then some of my friends who are working class, we're all in the same boat. What I will talk about though is the characters. Especially girls like me. Head girl Chiamaka isn't afraid to get what she wants, but soon everyone will know the price she has paid for power. Devon is definitely more accessible on an emotional level, which is why I think readers tended to prefer him.
Devon is a scholarship student who plays music and dreams of Julliard. I was starting to think that I was growing out of young adult books but then Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé went 'no you fucking don't get back here' and I was saved. I certainly think so. "So that way the messaging can kind of carry over in different contexts. I'd like to say that things start out a little more trivial but there is truly no levity to anything that comes out about these characters, it is only that things become darker and more and more dangerous with each passing day and revelation. ☂️ DIVERSITY:Black main characters: queer and Nigerian-Italian and Black American and gay main character. Without them, I don't play as well. There are many things I hate about Niveus, like how no one (besides Jack) is from my side of town and how everyone lives in huge houses with whitepicket fences, cooks who make them breakfast, drivers who take them to school, and credit cards with no limit tucked away in their designer backpacks. It is constantly described as a combination of Gossip Girl and Get Out, having never seen either of those, I relied on the back of the book and the inside flap to see if it was something I would like to read and suggest my young teenage daughter, (and followers to read). And i had a feeling that headmaster ward was in on something that i did not expect it to be aces. Ace of Spades is pure brilliance in terms of character development. Ace of Spades is less a mystery than it is a thriller, and thrilling it is. I watched them slowdance, arms wrapped around each other like they were naturally safe there.
Chiamaka is biracial and super rich, but she still feels like she's never going to be enough unless she pushes her ambitions further. It still gets funding?? I had blinked back the tears, quickly wiping them off my cheeks with the sleeve of the black tuxedo I'd rented, still watching them dance—like a class A creep—looking away only when it got too painful.
Bottom line:- I'm happy to have gotten a glance into the struggles that different people face growing up in America. It isn't long before Chiamaka and Devon discover the conspiracy isn't as simple as locating one random bully. The author gave us a multiple POV from both Devon and Chiamaka and I think they flowed really well into each other, Starting off where the other stopped and all that. I won't spoil it here, but if you're a white person reading this book (and you should), it can and will make you deeply uncomfortable. Together, Chiamaka and Devon team up to find out who Aces is before they ruin their lives and run them out of the school.
INTRODUCTION (You can skip this part and just read the blurb of course! Are your friends your friends and your enemies your enemies? Even if that love is for a version of me that isn't real. Review: Ok. Look at that cover! Get help and learn more about the design. This is not dark academia. You never know who you can really trust, and I think Àbíké-Íyímídé does an excellent job and exposing the more diabolical aspects of a dark academia setting. I hope this is a trend we continue to see more of in literature. This novel exists at the intersection of race, class, gender, and sexual politics, and it sheds light on the nefarious microaggressions society uses daily to plant seeds of doubt that make us question the existence of any of it. This was a stunning debut with what I thought was a perfect ending! For example, Jack is initially presented as a close friend of Devon, but we soon learn that their friendship is one-sided due to Jack's discomfort with Devon's sexuality.
