We get more insight into him due to emails he sends Jamie's father, but I don't think anything Jamie is reading sinks in at all. And honestly I would be more interested reading about them then the younger generation at this point. Jamie is possessive, jealous and petty. I'd always thought you would be blonde. But first suicide… and then the ending?? So I'm going to give The Last of August a BLUE rating. They understand each other, almost too well, and that causes them to protect themselves by lashing out at one another instead of suffering through things that may be good. He thought of others first. Jackson's debut is well-executed and surprises readers with a connective web of interesting characters and motives. It collapsed the second things righted themselves, left you desperate for the next earthquake. Charlotte did come across as slightly crazy at times though, and also seemed to have problems expressing her feelings. I honestly don't see how there can be a third book in this series. Their time at Jamie's mom's flat passed without incident, but strange things start to happen once they arrive at Charlotte's family's estate. I also love how Holmes may never actually admit it but she is totally falling for Watson, but before she can act on that she needs to figure out some things about herself and deal with some of the psychological trauma she's got going on. Charlotte, Jamie, and August go to work at attempting to figure out Leander's whereabouts by trying to deduce what case he was investigating, which seems to involve art forgery, Berlin art students, and vengeful Moriarty siblings still holding a grudge against Charlotte and wanting to know where their little brother is.
The relationship between Charlotte and Jamie is great, and I love them a lot. Can't find what you're looking for? Oh right, because they are so fucking good and because I ship Holmes and Watson with the darkest, most vehement flame. In the summer after graduation, Autumn and Finny reconnect and are finally ready to be more than friends. And OH MAN, does he get even more relatable as the books go on. Everyone believes that Salil Singh killed his girlfriend, Andrea Bell, five years ago—except Pippa Fitz-Amobi. But then, troubled with himself, Joe avoids her until one day he finds her in his cabin, where she tells Joe the story of herself and her ancestors.
We get Tom and Lena in this one again and they were not necessary. There was so much that I liked about this book. There's mystery and suspense. Jamie and Charlotte together are heartbreakingly sweet. Moving the setting from the school to England and then Berlin was a bad idea. She rightfully is still dealing with the aftermath of that.
