IF ANYTHING, HE PORTRAYED EVERYONE ELSE AS ASSHOLES. Sam suffers tremendously, the school vultures close in around him and make him suffer for what he sees as the deliberate and selfish decisions of his brother. Then the immigrants.
I didn't actually read this book, but as the spouse of a trans-person I can say that the title is both ignorant and hurtful. We shall always find someone to find different, freakish, someone we can bully. Someone wrote the book was bad representation and hurtful to the trans community. Review: My Brother's Name is Jessica by John Boyne. I am sick and tired of stories about disabled people that are centered around the ableds around them, stories about POC that are centered around the white people around them, and stories about trans people that are centered around the cis people around them. Not only is the title a trash-fire, it's also the line used in the emotional climax of the novel, the moment in which the brother, on behalf of his family, publicly accepts his sister's identity in front of the media (the mother is running for PM, it's at a press conference).
His mother wants the family to run in a way that looks good in politics and turns her nose down on people with colour and gay, lesbian and transgender people. His world is falling apart because he suddenly realizes his sister is a girl! Would you like it if people called you by the wrong name and gender because "it's catchy? IES . My Brother's Name is Jessica. " He constantly refers to the Jason / Jessica character as 'my brother, Jason', which I don't think an older child would do. It is about the dirty filthy myopic way of thinking and the people we hurt in the process.
There's no self awareness or meta layers here. The book's only saving grace was the character of Aunt Rose, who welcomed and fully accepted Jessica without question, and who helped Sam to understand what was going on. This is where I started getting wary. Much of the criticism is valid - the story does centre the experiences of Sam, the cisgendered younger brother of Jessica, and her parents rather than the experiences of Jessica herself however it does not validate their pain; instead these characters realise their difficulties are really irrelevant and that it is Jessica's experience that matters. He makes no effort to have a serious discussion about Jessica's transition, instead he is only concerned with asking if Jessica will continue to play football, and what will happen to her 'willy' – again, a very childlike reaction. The plot moved very fast and the enormity of the narrative was not delivered due to this speed. It's your brother Jason. Hello my name is jessica. '.. poignant and disarming story is full of heart and its crescendo will give you tingles' Attitude Magazine 'Outstanding' Irish Examiner. Brother Jessica, I immediately know, it is about a male to female trans person. Yes, Sam did not accept the transition of Jason to Jessica at first. Maybe I dug too deep into this book but I saw some negative comments and I hope I can see both sides of the equation. Let a trans person take a shot at writing a slightly-less awful version of it: "Sam Waver has always idolised his big sister.
Then, we have the constant misgendering and deadnaming of Jessica throughout the synopsis. Nature & Environment. In fiction, this power should be wielded carefully and only with the knowledge of the damage they will do. 1 person found this helpful.
No one needs another book about cis people "struggling" to deal with having a trans family member. Genre: Young Adult Fiction. Perhaps this is partly because of the novel's point of view. Certainly not well into secondary school age. If you get offended by people having opinions then you're in for a bad life. IMA-FUCKING-GINE how poorly that would have reflected upon the Lgbtqai comnunity? People were incredibly prejudiced then suddenly just not? Tonight is the first time they're going to meet. My brother's name is jessica. The once structured life led by the Wavers collapses publicly as Jason confesses his feeling of having been born into the wrong body. Well done John Boyne. The Son of Neptune (Heroes of Olympus Book 2).
Because we tend to become more and more assholish as we grow older and I agree. It is unmarked with clean pages free of inscriptions or marks and has been signed and numbered (22 of 150) by the author directly on to a bound-in limitation title page. Those who have read the book should have known, the siblings' aunt got really angry with the male character when she found out he had cut off Jessica's hair and EXPLICITLY told him that he had taken away one thing that Jessica had that she was able to call her own, that she could identify as part of her womanhood. Again, it reinforces a harmful stereotype - that in the face of transphobia you must remain polite and civil and try and see things from the point of view of people who actively wish you harm. Sam idolises Jason, who seems to have life sorted – he's kind, popular, amazing at football, and girls are falling over themselves to date him. Trans people get pissed because the book is transphobic (which it is). 'A story with so much heart that the pages practically pulse. Signed & Special Edition. As a reader/listener, I found his point of view more gullible than I would have expected from a modern-day teenager, but the format did suit the story and its telling. Here's my honest opinion. He's written, to me, like a young child. So unless the title and synopsis are completely and utterly wrong, unless they have literally nothing to do with this book, I don't even have to look at the first page. I am not looking for a debate, I am simply expressing my opinion.
First Edition Signed. Ewwwwww @ the title. It is told by 13-year-old Sam, brother of the 17-year-old Jessica. Can't find what you're looking for? He continues to reference Jason / Jessica in this way, even after the family has been told that Jessica is actually a girl, and wishes to be acknowledged as such. Shelved as 'no-thank-you'March 31, 2019. Homosexuality was considered a mental disorder. Author(s): John Boyne. So yeah, at no point does the book outgrow its title. One night he asks their high flying politician mum and her private secretary (their dad) to sit in the lounge.
None of them saw what was coming. Even if it had chapters alternating between Sam and Jessica, to give us an insight into both sides of the story. In UK, a man pretended to be gay on FB and raped 3 women( not gay)! Double ewwwww at the cis author. Otherwise they would not have bullied John and people like him. Such an honest, heartbreaking, and enlightening story discussing some of the most important issues that are dealt with daily - gender, relationships, family, politics and freedom. What you DON'T do is write a book like this, that exploits it. The book includes an Afterword from John Boyne explaining why he decided to write a book with a transgender character: "The worst piece of advice anyone can give a writer is to write about what they know. It is about people being ASSHOLES, BIGOTED AND PREJUDICED. I really felt for Jason/Jessica, contending with the rampant intolerance and misinformation displayed here, most of which seemed incredibly old-fashioned. Deadnaming and misgendering can break a trans person's spirit.
Overall, I think that if you want to read a book about a kid/teenager coming out as trans, it'd be a better use of your time and money to read something written by a trans author. I feel Sam was unneccesarily infantalised, and it is to the detriment of the novel. The one person he has always been able to rely on is his beloved older sibling - but when they announce that they are transitioning, Sam''s life is thrown upside down. We're recommending this for 11/12+ but it can definitely be read by younger readers who are curious about the topic and are okay with discussions of pornography - although many of the political jokes will go over their heads. This latest didn't quite hit the spot for me. Before I go further, let's be clear: I am a straight cis woman. Just because this is not a book by a trans person about a trans person in first person does not mean it is worthless. Now about the transphobia. I'm so glad Boyne created this character. However, when we read over my new synopsis, something still feels off. Sure, Jason had grown his hair long. This way, little Sam won't be heartbroken or lost--he'll be excited to have a sister. If you want to support trans people and trans stories, please go read those.
Until then, it is not acceptable for cis people to keep exploiting transgender experiences for profit. This book will be a catalyst for conversations in homes, it will encourage parents to learn about the struggles their child is battling, it will encourage transgender teenagers and people of all ages to allow society a little time to process change while having faith that this change is good and welcomed.
